January 2011

We have had a very busy winter and lots of things are in the planning stage for this year.

The Christmas Float was again a huge success and fun was had by all, despite the weather doing its best to stop even Father Christmas in his tracks. Unfortunately we did have to cancel a few evenings but we hope you all understand and fingers crossed for next year.

This year we were really pleased that so many of our supporters gave up their time to come and help. These "non-member" supporters make such a difference to us and on  a couple of the nights it was entirely down to them that we were able to go ahead.

As you know some of the money raised from this event goes to taking some of our elderly community out for a days entertainment. This is a really special day for them, some of whom live alone and rarely get the chance to talk to others and have a bit of fun. We have already booked up this years day at Westenhanger Castle and arrangements are being made for transport, entertainment, food and all the other things that go to make a special day.

We have sponsored a local youth football team this year, Brabourne and Smeeth. They are now the proud owners of a new kit and very smart they look too. Good luck to them for the rest of the season.

We recently helped to pay for a trip to Disneyland for a terminally ill little girl who lives in the area. Without help the family would have been unable to go and I am sure you will agree that this is a very special way for the funds you help us raise to be spent. We sincerely hope they had a great time and our thoughts are with them through this very difficult time.

Some of our funds go to other Lions Clubs in parts of the world suffering from hardship from disasters. This money goes direct to the local club who then oversees the project to make sure the money goes to where it is needed. This is a fantastic way to ensure that all the money is used responsibly and it is reassuring to know that the people who look after the money are local men and women in the community, just the same as our little club here! If you want to know more about our international work go to our "home" page and click on the international.  Some recent donations have been for Haiti and Australia.

As for this year, we are now in the planning stages for our Sponsored Walk (see separate page under "events"). Also out soon are our Easter Eggs in a pub near you, just waiting for you to give £1 to try and win it - dont eat it all at once! Many thanks to our local Landlords and companys for agreeing to have these for us.

We hope to see some of you soon and don't forget you can contact us via this website or, if you are interested in becoming a member please call our President, John Brook, and he can tell you more. (tel. 0845 601 5212).
